How the Earl judges
Every item on EarlRed faces the same five tests, in the same order, so one verdict can be held up against the next. Price is mentioned for context, but the Earl does not judge price. The Earl judges whether a thing is a joy to own.
The five criteria
| Criterion | The question | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Craft | Is it made the way the finest of its kind are made: materials, making, finish? |
| 2 | Feel | How does it feel in the hand, on the body or in the seat: touch, weight, comfort, sound? |
| 3 | Presence | Is the design right, and how does it read to people who know? |
| 4 | Delight | Is it a pleasure to own, use and look after, from the boutique to the service desk? |
| 5 | Story | Does it carry a real story: heritage, provenance and moments worth telling when someone asks? |
Each criterion is rated Pass, Mixed or Fail. When we cannot verify something, the rating is Mixed and the post says what is missing.
The red seal
The verdict follows a fixed rule, never a mood. An item earns the red seal, Sealed, when it passes at least four criteria and fails none. Anything else goes Unsealed. Taste still matters, and each post says who an item suits even when it falls short.
The evidence we use
The Earl does not claim to have handled every watch or slept in every suite. Craft comes from makers' own documents and named experts. Feel and delight come from the published accounts of named reviewers, editors and owners, which we quote briefly and link. We give the date we checked anything that changes.
What we will not do
We never point readers to replicas or counterfeits. Authentication guides show how to spot a fake, not where to buy one. We never call a purchase an investment or promise it will hold its value; resale figures are history, not a forecast. Travel posts describe the experience; they are not financial advice.
How we make money
Some links earn us a commission when you buy. That never changes a rating: Unsealed stays Unsealed.
When things change
Models, materials and services change. We update a verdict when the evidence changes, and the date on the post shows when it was published.
